24 Karat Jewelers opened its doors on March 1st, 1979 on the corner of Avenue A and 24th Street. The store began as a small jewelry and engraving shop with a 600sqft storefront; the business' primary emphasis was repairing jewelry and watches as well as making awards. Later in 1982, 24 Karat expanded into the adjacent suite to offer a wider range of jewelry for sale. Then again in 1985 and 1991, the store expanded into the two suites to the right side of the store. These expansions were for opening up the Jewelry Showroom as well as create an entire Awards Showroom for the engraving portion of the business.
In 2006, 24 Karat acquired the last 800sqft suite to its left to create one of Yuma's largest jewelry showrooms featuring 19 showcases and 8 standalone display cases. Around the same time as the expansion, the jewelry repair shop was home to a Laser welding system. This state of the art tool allows the jewelers to make intricate repairs such as repronging most gemstones without the need to unmount them. The quality of fine chain repair improved drastically; "stiff" portions of repaired chains now became a thing of the past.
Only a year after the company's largest expansion, the City of Yuma purchased the property on which 24 Karat stood via eminent domain for the Avenue A road widening project. In the early summer of 2009, 24 Karat held its largest liquidation sale in preparation for the move, giving away free chains to the first 100 customers on the first 3 days of the sale and marking inventory down as much as 75%. On July 1st, 2009, 24 Karat closed its doors on Avenue A after 30 years in its location.
In only 6 days, 24 Karat opened its new doors to the public on July 6th at its present location at 2390 S Avenue B. The phone number remained the same, (928) 782-3306, to help customers find the new store. The address may have changed, but the all the products and services are still consistent within the company.
